The Delahaye 135 was introduced in 1935 by Delahaye, a French manufacturer renowned for its luxury and racing cars since the late 19th century. The “M” in 135 M stands for “Modified,” indicating an enhanced version with a more powerful engine and a refined chassis.

Produced between the Great Depression and World War II, a challenging period in Europe, it became a symbol of French automotive elegance. Its production continued in small quantities after the war until the early 1950s.

The Delahaye 135 was not just a luxury car; it also boasted an impressive racing record. It won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1938, thanks to its robust chassis and reliable 3.2-liter inline six-cylinder engine (later 3.6 liters). Its engineering was advanced for its time, featuring an independent front suspension and a synchronized gearbox, providing a smoother ride than many of its contemporaries.

Like many luxury cars of the era, the Delahaye 135 M was often sold as a rolling chassis, allowing buyers to commission custom bodywork from coachbuilders such as Henri Chapron, Figoni et Falaschi, or Saoutchik. The Delahaye 135 became an icon of pre- and post-war French design, often associated with the elite and artistic circles of the time. Today, the Delahaye 135 M is highly sought after by collectors, fetching high prices at auctions due to its rarity and historical significance. For example, a 1949 Delahaye 135 M with Guilloré bodywork sold for $1.65 million at a Bonhams auction in 2023.
